About
David Matthew King received his BA and MA in English Literature from the City University of New York. Between 2005 and 2017, David worked in higher education as an administrator and educator, teaching courses in English literature, composition, and creative writing. As a musician, performer, visual artist, and proponent of interdisciplinary education, David frequently incorporated film, music, art, writings by artists and critics, and in-class drawing into his English courses, and received educational grants to enable class visits to art museums around New York City.
Born and raised along the coast of Southern California, David moved to New York in 2004 to pursue a career in music. After a visit to Chelsea art galleries in October of that year, David started making conte crayon drawings which he shared with a co-worker, a graduate of the MA Program at Christie’s, who provided feedback and direction. The following summer David enrolled in an introductory drawing course in Santa Barbara. Upon returning to New York in August 2005, David created a portfolio of oil stick drawings which he submitted to Pratt Institute, where he was accepted. Unable to afford the tuition, David continued studying studio art at CUNY before changing his major to English. In 2017, after more than a decade of writing, drawing, painting, teaching, and performing, David resumed formal training at the Art Students League of New York where he studied collage and assemblage, drawing, painting, color theory, and abstraction technique.
